Can you sell your hair for money?…
Yes, indeed you can! Although it is one of those crazy ways of making money! But lots of people do it, and apparently there is a good market demand for it as well.
If you have lovely, long, luxurious hair which you are thinking of cutting short, you may be interested to know that you can sell your hair for some extra cash.
Long hair can be time-consuming to maintain, and may be inconvenient or difficult to style in a hurry in today’s busy lifestyle. Hair traders are willing to pay handsomely for your lovely locks.
Where to Sell Your Hair for Cash?
You can do this either online or locally. Here are some websites and places you can try:
1. Sell Online
There are many websites that will happily buy your hair. Here are a few:
OnlineHairAffair.comThis is a hair specific classified sites, sort of like Craigslist but only for selling hair. The down side is that unlike Craigslist they charge you a listing fee starting at $8 for a two weeks listing. That said, the plus is that this is a well-known site to hair buyers, and your chances of selling your hair is much better than selling on a general classified site.
Hairwork.comThis site was originally build for people to make extra money selling their hair. But it has since expanded, and beside selling hair people now sell art work that include hair. Hairwork charges $20 to make a listing.
WorldOfWigs.comThey pay anywhere between $3-$5 per oz of hair if it passes the industry standards. To sell your hair to this company, your hair must be at least 12 inches long.
Craigslist & eBay
If you’re not keen to pay the charges on these two sites, you could try selling your hair through eBay or Craigslist, but potential customers may be easier to find on websites specializing in hair sales. But it only takes a few minutes to set up a listing, and in Craigslist’s case its free, so I think its worth a shot.
2. Sell Locally
This is a little bit more time-consuming and requires a bit leg work but it’s doable. You need to find people in your local area who buy hairs or pay for your hair either cut or attached to your head. For example, many hair salons have their own hair style models. You could become one.
Usually you are a paid a small payment as well as a free hair cut. Simply check with your local hair salons to see if any of them are looking for a hair style model. You can also check the newspaper ads, Craigslist and Yellow pages listing for that.
Now, if you are not in it for the money or perhaps can’t find anyone to sell your hair to, you can donate your hair to a cancer or children organizations such as
LocksOfLove that makes wigs for cancer patients.
You don’t get any money out of this deal, but you make a cancer patient’s life a little happier along with your own life.
Advertising
It’ll be easier to sell your hair if you provide good photos and clear descriptions. Here are a few suggestions as to what details to include:
- The length of hair you are selling
- The colour of your hair
- The texture of your hair, whether it is thick, curly, straight, etc.
- How often you wash and style your hair
- What you generally use to style your hair, such as styling products, blow driers, or curling irons
- Whether you smoke or drink alcohol
- How healthy your diet is
- Don’t be afraid to promote your hair for how good it is, you need to make people want to buy your hair, but be honest.
How Much Can You Get for Your Hair?
It really depends on many factors including the length and color of your hair. When you are deciding how much to charge for your hair, take a look at other similar listings to get an idea of what the market price is, it could range anywhere between the high hundreds to a few thousand.
Tips
There are a few ways things you need to know first before you cut your hair so that you can make the most out of it.
- It’s best to wait until your customer has paid you before you go cutting your hair.
- If your hair is shorter than 10 inches, has been coloured, bleached, permed, has grey hairs or you smoke, it is unlikely that you will be able to sell your hair.
- Be careful not to disclose your identity or home address for your own protection when selling online. Do not include your full name in the listing, and if your email address includes your name, set up and use an alternative email.
- Buyers are in search of hair that is not styled too often, is not washed on a daily basis, and the longer the better. Maintain your hair in the most natural state you can and grow it out as long as possible while still keeping it in a good, healthy condition to get the best price for your hair.
